Competitions

Over the years, I have participated in quite a few math competitions. The most notable one in recent years is probably the Financial Mathematics & Engineering Student Programming Competition in 2021. The goal was to optimize a portfolio of stocks by constructing a trading strategy which uses historical stock prices. In the end, we were third place winners!

Communicating Maths

Math, I feel like, is one of the most misunderstood and mistaught subjects in school and university. One of my goals in life is to show that not only math is useful but also a worthy subject to study on its own right.

Videos ¬

I am a big fan of channels like 3Blue1Brown or Aleph 0. So naturally, I became interested in making videos about math and related topics as well.

This first one was done for a seminar. The goal was for students in groups of three or four to make a video on a mathematical topic. We chose to make a video about Van der Waerden’s Theorem. As suggested by the seminar, we animated most of the video in Manim, the animation engine originally written by Grant Sanderson, the maker behind 3Blue1Brown.

The next one was actually for the ‘‘Summer of Math Exposition 2022’’, a math video competition hosted by Grant Sanderson and others. Despite the fact that we technically could have just submitted our video for the seminar, my friend, who also in my group in the seminar, and I would decide to make a completely new one. This time around, we tackled another beautiful result in Combinatorics dealing with counting the number of tilings of a chess board. Although we didn’t win one of the main prizes, we got very far and are both happy as to how it turned out.
